October 13 - Patuxent River Boat Tour and Mulch Recycling Facility Tour

Six members plus three guests enjoyed the tour of the Recycling Plant and boat tour of the Patuxent River. The weather was overcast and a little windy. The river was higher then normal. The beaver dam had been effected by the winds and high water. The excitement happened when we returned to the dock. The end of the dock was dry when we left but because the water has been rising the end was underwater. Boards were laid and we were rescued.
The recycling site sets on fifty acres of land surrounded by trees. Yard waste and food scraps are brought here. There were no birds flying around as you see at the trash sites. All of the food waste is covered then run through a shredder, it is covered with tarps and cooks for a period of time. The end results is Leafgro Gold. At the end of the tour each of us were given a small bag with a small bag of Leafgro Gold plus other goodies.

Attendees: Linda Millette, Pam Smart, Iona Black, Marilyn Berkut, Joyce Meyer, Esther Neckere, Julie Harrison plus guests

June 21 - Suitland Bog

Pam Smart, who arranged the tour, along with Linda Millette and Deborah Determan toured the Suitland Bog Natural Area with Park Ranger Chris Garrett from the Upper Marlboro Office for MNCPPC.  Ranger Garrett gave a wonderful and informative tour, explaining that the Suitland Bog (which means wet, spongy ground with soil composed mainly of decayed vegetable matter) has over 300 species of plants, 20 which are designated as rare, threatened, or endangered--and several plants which are carnivorous.  The bog is a unique wetland habitat and the tour showcased a huge variety of plants and was a wonderful way to spend a morning.

 Projects

Holloway Gardens

Holloway Garden is especially beautiful and showy in June. The lavender plants which Pam put in several years ago are doing quite well against the hot cement sidewalk, a perfect spot for them to flourish. The pinkish red Knock Out Rose is the highlight of the garden and easy for drivers by to spot. The spring daffodils have now given way to Marian Moreland's triple layer orange daylillies. It was very fortunate that Marian's daughter gave Pam a few of her mother's daylillies (circa 1910) which have become quite prolific in Pam's garden as Hollaway Gardens.

Nomination from Danita Matthews MEd.  Science Department Chair  Gwynn Park High School

It is my pleasure to nominate Kaila Odura Asante for the Gardening Award. Kaila is a very responsible, motivated and confident student.  She comes to school each day with an excitement for learning and a dedication for going above and beyond at school.  Kaila pays close attention to details and makes sure that her daily work is not only accurate, but also of the utmost quality.

In addition to her academic excellence, Kaila is also a model leader who sets a positive example for her FFA peers.  Kaila enjoys working in the greenhouse, and is a dependable student during our biggest fundraiser, the Annual Spring Plant Sale.
